The Product
Greenfinn’s chokeberry grits are made from the juicy dark berries of the chokeberry bush. The aronia in this product is grown on the producer’s own farm, and in addition to the pulp, the grits contain the skins and seeds.
From Hedge to Jar
The aronia bush is a familiar hedge plant to many, but few make any other use of the chokeberry. Hedges often feature ornamental aronia, whose berries are smaller than those of the true chokeberry. Chokeberry naturally contains vitamin C and fibre, and its mild flavour works in almost any berry recipe.
The Whole Berry
Greenfinn’s berry grits contain the entire berry: seeds, pulp and skins. Thousands of whole berries go into a single jar.
How It’s Made
The Finnish producer dries the berries and grinds them to just the right coarseness, so that most of the seeds are broken and the berries’ natural oils and aromas come through better. That way you can enjoy Finnish berries easily all year round.
Taste
Does chokeberry taste bitter? As grits, the flavour is pleasantly mild. That is why chokeberry combines well with other berries in all kinds of smoothies and baked goods.
Ornamental or True Aronia
Is ornamental aronia the same as chokeberry? Not quite. The berries of ornamental aronia are usable but smaller and less flavourful than the chokeberry used to make Greenfinn’s grits.
